---------------
Overview
- Players: 2-4
- Playtime: 20-30 minutes
- Recommended Age: 8+
In this game, players create terrain by placing map cards, deploying exploration tokens to earn survey points. Along the way,
you may interfere with others, flip cards to alter the map, and sometimes cooperate, making each moment unpredictable.
The goal is to accumulate more points than anyone else by the time all map cards are placed.
Components (for a 4-player game)
- Map Cards: 36
- Score Tracking Cards: 2 (shared)
- Score Tokens: 4 (1 per player)
- Exploration Tokens: 3 per player (12 total)
- Red Feather Token: 1
- Retreat Tokens: 4 (1 per player)
Component Descriptions
Map Cards
These cards are double-sided, and each side is randomized, showing no relation to the other.
Cards are divided into three horizontal and two vertical rows, randomly displaying the following terrain:
- Plains
- Roads
- Mountains
- Forests
- Coastlines
In addition to these, the following objects may overlap the terrain:
- Fort (on Roads)
- Port (on Coastlines)
- Red Feather (on Mountains, Forests, Plains)
- Creatures (6 types, appearing on Roads, Plains, Coastlines, and Forests)
Exploration Tokens
Players must place their exploration tokens on connected terrain to score points.
At the end of the game, points are awarded for terrains with remaining tokens.
Red Feather Token
The Red Feather Token serves as an obstruction. If a map card with a red feather icon is placed,
the red feather token can be placed on any space. Points cannot be scored on a line with a red feather token at the end of the game.
Score Tracking Cards
The two shared score tracking cards are used for everyone. Arrange them side-by-side, face up,
for score counting. Place players’ score tokens on the score card to track final scores,
making it easy to see each player’s points without needing individual tracking.
Retreat Tokens
Each player receives one retreat token.
These can only be used once per game to withdraw an exploration token and reposition it.
Rules
- Game Setup
- Shuffle the map cards into a deck.
- Distribute components:
- Exploration Tokens: 3 per player
- Score Token: 1 per player
- Score Tracking Card: 1 shared card
- Retreat Token: 1 per player
- Place the Red Feather Token nearby.
- Determine the starting player (the player who last visited an island or a place with “island” in its name).
Gameplay
Players can take the following actions:- Required Action: ①
- Optional Actions: ②, ③
① Draw and Place a Map Card
- Place a map card adjacent to any existing cards. Only the starting player may place the first card horizontally in the center.
- Cards can overlap partially or completely, except on spaces occupied by tokens.
- Coastal terrain can connect to any terrain shape as long as it’s adjacent.
- Ensure the layout fits within a 15x15 grid to prevent spilling over the table.
- Red Feather Obstruction
- If a map card with a red feather icon is drawn and placed,
the red feather token can be placed on any space. Any line with the red feather at the end of the game won’t score points.
- If a map card with a red feather icon is drawn and placed,
② Place an Exploration Token (Optional)
- Place exploration tokens on the map to earn points. Points are based on the connected terrain areas (up to 3 per turn).
- Once placed, tokens cannot be moved.
- If another player has tokens on the same line, neither will earn points. If you have more tokens than others on the line, you will earn the points.
- Retreating Tokens
- Once per game, a player can use their retreat token to remove one of their exploration tokens and immediately place it on another unoccupied space.
This retreat and reposition happen simultaneously.
- Once per game, a player can use their retreat token to remove one of their exploration tokens and immediately place it on another unoccupied space.
③ Flip a Map Card (Optional)
- Flip a map card that isn’t overlapped or covered by tokens. You may choose which side to display.
- If the card has a red feather icon, move the red feather token as desired.
You can reflip previously flipped cards as long as they aren’t occupied by tokens or overlapped.
- Repeat until the Deck is Depleted
- Play until the deck is empty (for a 4-player game, each player takes 9 turns; with 2-3 players, each player takes turns drawing 9 cards).
- Final Actions and End of Game
- After the final action, the game ends.
- Scoring Survey Points
- Calculate survey points based on the terrain connections.
Scoring Points
Connected Terrain
Points are scored for each connected line of the same terrain type (referred to as a "line").
Points are awarded based on the number of tiles, provided only the player’s tokens are present on that line. If other players have tokens on the line, points go to the player with the most tokens.
Scoring Method: Lines can connect vertically or horizontally (no diagonal connections). The following elements add bonus points:
- Creatures: 1 point per creature along the line
- Structures (Fort, Port): Each structure adds 2 points (fort on roads, port on coastlines)
Note: Lines with tokens from other players earn no points unless you have the majority.
Winning the Game
The player with the highest points wins. If tied, the player with the most creatures in their longest line wins.
If still tied, players can resolve the tie amicably by discussion.
